The Environment Relief Fund (Amendment) Scheme, 2024 updates the 2008 scheme. Key changes include transferring the fund management to the Central Government and appointing the Central Pollution Control Board as the fund manager for five years starting in January 2025. The fund will now include compensation for environmental damage, penalties, and interest. An online portal will be created for easier fund management. The funds will be invested to ensure quick disbursement, and the Fund Manager must release payments within 30 days. The scheme also includes restoration plans for environmental damage, with audits by C&AG. Effective from December 17, 2024.
