Act Name/Rule Name: Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020
Type of Document: Press Release
Date: January 15, 2025
FSSAI has addressed the challenges faced by Food Business Operators (FBOs) and consumers regarding food labelling by introducing a structured date for enforcing amendments. The move aims to streamline compliance and make it easier for businesses while ensuring greater transparency for consumers.
These regulations prescribe the labelling requirements of pre-packaged foods and display of essential information on premises where food is manufactured, processed, served and stored.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has fixed the date of enforcement of labelling amendments specified under the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020, starting from July 1st every year. This date applies to amendments related to food labelling and any changes in labelling specified under other FSS regulations, with a minimum gap of 180 days from the notification date.
The initiative will promote operational efficiency for Food Business Operators (FBOs) by offering them sufficient time to comply with the new regulations. This predictable enforcement timeline also addresses issues related to the use of pre-printed packaging materials, reducing waste and environmental impact. For consumers, the measure ensures better transparency in food labelling, helping them make informed decisions, while bolstering confidence in food product safety and quality.
