The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in collaboration with market participants, organized SMART 2025: A Symposium on India’s Securities Market Tech Stack in Mumbai. The event highlighted India’s technological advancements in the securities market and featured participants from 11 countries. Renowned technologist Mr. Nandan Nilekani delivered the keynote address.

Over the years, India’s securities market has matured significantly in terms of people, processes, and products. SEBI has played a pivotal role in fostering an efficient, transparent, and investor-friendly market by:

  • Introducing proactive policy reforms to safeguard investor interests.
  • Simplifying market access for investors and businesses alike.
  • Expanding capital-raising avenues and offering diverse investment products to meet the aspirations of millions.

India has been a global leader in leveraging technology for market efficiency.

Key advancements include:

  • T+1 and T+0 settlement cycles—a first in the world.
  • IPO timeline reduction from T+6 to T+3 days.
  • Online KYC and Mutual Fund Central platforms.
  • Pledge-Repledge mechanisms for enhanced transparency in secondary markets.
  • ASBA (Applications Supported by Blocked Amount) for secondary markets.

SEBI has embraced technology to streamline its internal functions, such as:

  • Faster registration of intermediaries.
  • Speedier observations on IPO offer documents.
  • Online dispute resolution mechanisms for investor grievances.

These measures have enhanced the ease of doing business for both market participants and retail investors.

SEBI ensures robust cybersecurity frameworks to safeguard market operations and its internal processes against potential misuse of technology.

SMART 2025 showcased India’s progress in the capital markets and shared insights into the lessons learned. Organized by SEBI in collaboration with Market Infrastructure Institutions (MIIs) and the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), the event was attended by over 350 participants from India and 11 global jurisdictions.

SEBI’s continued efforts aim to make India’s securities market more efficient, transparent, and technology-driven, strengthening its position as a global leader.
