The Government of India has announced a revised timeline for the implementation of amendments to the labelling provisions under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. The amendments aim to improve transparency, ensure accurate product information, and empower consumers to make informed choices. Going forward, any amendments related to labelling will come into effect on either January 1st or July 1st of the year, with a 180-day notice period. This provides sufficient time for businesses to adapt to the changes.

The government’s decision balances consumer protection with ease of doing business, reducing the compliance burden on businesses. In exceptional situations, amendments may be implemented on a case-by-case basis.

The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, require clear and standardized labelling on packaged goods, providing consumers with essential information, such as net quantity, MRP, manufacturing date, country of origin, and manufacturer details. This ensures that consumers have access to the necessary details for informed purchasing decisions and promotes trust in the marketplace. The rules also reduce legal uncertainties and disputes, fostering a fair trade environment.
