Colour Identification of Medical Oxygen Cylinders

Notification/Circular No.: No. C.VIII(3)125/Circular/GCR

Document Date: January 28, 2025

Applicable Act/Rule: Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016

Applicable Section/Rule: Rule 8(1)

This circular directs all medical oxygen cylinder filling plants and manufacturers to comply with Rule 8(1) of the Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016, which mandates that cylinders be painted with appropriate identification colours as specified in IS:4379 for industrial cylinders, IS:15683 or IS:2878 for fire extinguishers and IS:3933 for Medical Cylinders.

Medical oxygen cylinders must adhere to the colour-coding standard specified in IS:3933 to ensure clear identification and differentiation from other cylinders filled with gases. Filling plants are instructed to check that cylinders are correctly painted before storage or dispatch, and manufacturers must ensure that all cylinders are properly painted before delivery to customers.

This ensures safety and standardisation in the handling of medical oxygen cylinders, minimising risks of confusion with other gas cylinders. Non-compliance may lead to regulatory action.
