All Agency Banks to Remain Open on March 31, 2025

Notification/Circular No.: RBI/2024-25/112

Document Date: February 11, 2025

Applicable Act/Rule: Banking Regulation Act, 1949

Effective Date: March 31, 2025

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed all agency banks to remain open on March 31, 2025 (Monday), despite it being a public holiday. This decision follows a request from the Government of India to ensure that all government receipts and payments for the financial year 2024-25 are duly accounted for.

Banks handling government transactions must ensure that their branches remain operational and provide full banking services on this day. Additionally, banks are required to inform the public about the availability of these services.

The RBI has instructed all agency banks (banks that handle government transactions) to stay open on March 31, 2025, even though it is a public holiday. This is to ensure that all government-related payments and receipts for the financial year 2024-25 are processed within the same financial year.

  • Government-related transactions (such as tax payments) can still be completed on March 31.
  • Regular banking services may also be available at these branches.
  • Banks must publicly announce that they will be open on this day.

This move helps avoid delays in government financial records and ensures smooth year-end accounting.
