SEBI Directs Use of ‘1600’ Phone Series to Curb Fraud and Protect Investors

Notification/Circular No. – PR No. 20/2025

Document Date – April 8, 2025

Applicable Act/Rule – Securities Exchange Board of India Act, 1992

SEBI has issued a public release advising all its regulated and registered entities to use the newly introduced ‘1600’ series phone numbers, as per TRAI’s guidelines, exclusively for making service and transactional voice calls to their existing customers. This move aims to help investors easily recognise genuine calls from SEBI-authorised entities and reduce the risk of falling victim to fraudulent calls made from regular 10-digit mobile numbers.

Investors are advised to stay alert and report any suspicious or unsolicited commercial communications (UCC) as follows:

  • Lodge a DND complaint through telecom apps, websites, or the TRAI DND app, or by calling/SMS to 1909.

This initiative strengthens investor safety by promoting clear identification of authorised communications from SEBI-registered entities.
