Amendment in Import Policy for Platinum under HS Code 7110

Notification/Circular No.: 60 /2024-25
Document Date: March 5, 2025
Applicable Section/Rule: Chapter 71 of ITC (HS), 2022, Schedule – I (Import Policy)

The Indian government has tightened the import regulations for certain forms of platinum by moving them from the “Free” category to the “Restricted” category. This means that importers can no longer bring in these types of platinum without prior government approval.

What has changed?

Under the new rule, imports of platinum under the following HS Codes require approval:

Key Takeaway:

  • Imports of platinum in unwrought, powder, and other forms now require approval from authorities.
  • Platinum alloys with 99% or more purity remain exempt and can be freely imported.

Why is this important?

  • For Importers: They must now obtain a special license before bringing in these types of platinum, which could slow down the import process and increase costs.
  • For Industries Using Platinum: Businesses in jewellery, electronics, automotive, and medical sectors that rely on platinum may face supply chain challenges or price increases.
  • For the Government: This measure could help regulate platinum imports, control market fluctuations, and prevent potential misuse (such as illegal trading or money laundering).
