Guidelines on disposal of Expired / Unused drugs

Applicable Act/Rule – Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Drugs Rules, 1945

Drugs Consultative Committee (DCC), in its 58th meeting, recommended the formulation of disposal guidelines, leading to the creation of this guidance document by a DCC sub-committee and its subsequent approval by the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB).

CDSCO has officially circulated a guidance document titled WI/01/DCC-P-25 to all State and Union Territory Drug Controllers. This document provides detailed instructions for the safe disposal of expired and unused medications.

Expired drugs are defined as those past their labelled expiry date, while unused drugs refer to those left unused by consumers.
