List of Ingredient to be Displayed on the Label of Food

Overview of Clause 5(2) of Food Safety and Standards (Labeling and Display) Regulations),  2020

Clause 5(2) specifies how ingredients should be declared. By clearly identifying ingredient composition, additives, and component origins, it enhances transparency and protects consumer interests. FBOs must diligently update labels to maintain regulatory compliance and trust in the market.

In addition to the general requirement, every package shall carry following information on the label:

1. Name of the Food:

Primary label (Front of Pack) must clearly state the true nature of the product.

  • If an official regulatory name exists, it must be used.
  • Otherwise, a descriptive or common name is required.

A brand/trade name is acceptable only if it complies with advertising regulations (FSSAI 2018)

2. List of the Ingredients:

List of ingredients must:

  • Be titled “Ingredients” (“List of Ingredients”).
  • List ingredients in descending order by weight or volume at time of manufacture.
  • Include carried-over additives that have a technological function.
  • Use specific names, or permitted class titles when applicable (e.g., “Cheese,” “Fish,” “Starch”)

3. Compound Ingredients:

If an ingredient is itself a mixture, two options are allowed:

  • Declare the compound ingredient, followed by its components in brackets by weight order.
  • Or, list all sub-ingredients as if added directly—except when the compound < 5% of the product and non‑additive; then sub-ingredients may be omitted.

4. Additional Mandatory Declarations:

Labels must also include:

  • Veg/Non‑Veg symbol: green circle for vegetarian, brown triangle for non‑veg, sized per regulations.
  • Food additives: list along with INS number or functional class name.
  • Name and address of the manufacturer or brand owner with qualifiers (e.g., “Manufactured by…”)

Penalty for non-compliance:

Any person who whether by himself or by any other person on his behalf manufactures for sale or stores or sells or distributes or imports any article of food for human consumption which is mis-branded, shall be liable to a penalty which may extend to three lakh rupees.
