Mandatory Allotment and activation of UAN through UMANG APP using FAT -reg.

Notification/Circular No. – No: WSU/MemberProfilePt1/E-965649/2025-26/22 dated July 30, 2025

Applicable Act/Rule – Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952

EPFO had earlier introduced a simplified process for allotting and activating Universal Account Numbers (UANs) through the UMANG App, using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT), as per Circular dated April 8, 2025.

From August 1, 2025, it is mandatory that UAN allotment and activation be done only through the Face Authentication Technology (FAT) available in the UMANG App, using Aadhaar credentials. This move is expected to standardise the process, reduce duplicate or erroneous UAN generation, and simplify onboarding.

The existing employer-based process for UAN generation will continue only in exceptional cases, such as:

  • International Workers
  • Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan

The detailed user manual for this process was already provided in the earlier circular dated April 8, 2025.
