Extension of Public Utility Service Status to Iron & Steel Industry

Circular No./ Notice No – S.O. 3751(E) dated August 14, 2025

Applicable Act/Rule – Industrial Disputes Act, 1947

The Central Government had earlier, through Notification S.O. 815(E) dated February 14, 2025, declared the services of industries engaged in Iron and Steel (item 7 of the First Schedule) as a Public Utility Service (PUS) for six months, effective from February 17, 2025. This was done to ensure industrial peace and uninterrupted operations in this critical sector.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has now extended this PUS status for a further six months starting from August 17, 2025. This means the Iron and Steel industry will continue to be treated as a Public Utility Service until February 17, 2026.

During this period, the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act restrict workers from going on strike or employers from declaring lockouts without prior notice, ensuring stability in operations vital for infrastructure and industrial growth.
