Immersion of Eco-Friendly Idols in Natural Water Bodies – MPCB Circular

Notification No./Circular No. – मप्रनि/ससं (जप्रनि)/250826-FTS-0119 dated August 26, 2025

Applicable Act/Rule – Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981; Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974

The Bombay High Court, via its order dated July 24, 2025 in PIL No. 96/2024, directed that idols up to six feet in height, including those made of Plaster of Paris (POP), should only be immersed in artificial tanks. This aligned with the Government of Maharashtra’s August 1, 2025 decision providing related guidelines. Several local bodies sought clarity on immersion practices for eco-friendly idols under six feet. MPCB convened the 10th meeting of its technical sub-committee on August 25, 2025, to address these concerns

Following deliberations, MPCB issued the following instructions:

  • Eco-friendly idols under six feet tall should preferably be immersed in artificial tanks (e.g., artificial ponds).
  • Where no such artificial facility exists, immersion in natural water bodies is permitted, but only if reuse guidelines from the August 1, 2025 government resolution remain strictly followed
