BIS notifies Indian Standards w.r.t. Environmental Management

Notification No./Circular No. – Ref: HQ-PUB013/1/2020-PUB-BIS (1310) dated August 07, 2025

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has notified the establishment of new Indian Standards across multiple sectors including environmental management, climate change, tissue paper testing, municipal governance, petroleum refineries, and healthcare. The notification also provides timelines for withdrawal of older versions where applicable. These updates align Indian Standards with ISO norms and evolving sustainability requirements.

  • Air Pollution Control in Refineries: IS 10179:2025 (First Revision) establishes updated practices for controlling air pollution in petroleum refineries, replacing IS 10179:1982 effective from February 5, 2026.
  • Environmental & Climate Standards: Multiple ISO-aligned standards adopted, including IS/ISO 14017:2022 (verification of water statements), IS/ISO 14068-1:2023 (carbon neutrality), IS/ISO 14080:2018 (GHG methodologies), IS/ISO 14093:2022 (climate resilience financing), and IS/ISO 14097:2021 (investment reporting for climate change).
  • Emission Monitoring: IS 11255 (Part 16):2025 introduces chemical absorption methods for mercury species in flue gas.
  • Tissue Paper & Products: A comprehensive series of test methods under IS 14661, aligned with ISO standards, covering vocabulary, thickness, tensile strength, wet strength, grammage, absorption, and disintegration in water.
  • Municipal Governance Standards: IS 18006 introduced with parts covering Fire NOC, Municipal Grievance Redressal, and Trade License – aimed at standardising municipal service processes.
  • Healthcare & Miscellaneous: IS 19310:2025 (analysis code of practice for oleo-uromacroscopy) and IS 19311:2025 (standard abbreviations for homoeopathic drugs) established.
