Applicable Act/Rule – Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934
The Reserve Bank of India has released an updated set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the Digital Rupee (Central Bank Digital Currency – CBDC). These updated FAQs consolidate operational, technical and usage-related clarifications for both retail (e₹-R) and wholesale (e₹-W) CBDC pilots, which are currently active across selected banks and institutions.
RBI has formally notified a revised and expanded FAQ document covering the functioning of the Digital Rupee. The updated FAQs provide comprehensive clarifications on the nature of e₹, wallet usage, denominations, programmability, offline capabilities, legal tender status, settlement mechanisms, and distinctions between CBDC and UPI. The document also specifies current pilot participants, supported wallet apps, and operational rules for person-to-person, person-to-merchant, and interbank transactions. These FAQs further elaborate on the creation, issuance and distribution of e₹, security aspects of e₹ wallets, KYC linkage, 24×7 transaction availability, and use-cases in retail and wholesale CBDC pilots. By issuing this FAQ update, RBI has standardised public guidance on the CBDC framework and ensured uniform understanding among users, merchants, banks and institutions.
