Enforcement Action Against Use of Auramine in Food Products

Notification/Circular No. RCD-15001/16/2025-Regulatory-FSSAI dated November 28, 20      25

Applicable Act/Rule: Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006
Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011

Applicable Section/Rule – Section 3(1)(zz)(v) (Food deemed unsafe if containing non-permitted additives)

Auramine is an industrial dye used in textiles and leather. It is a non-permitted synthetic colour under the 2011 Food Products Standards & Food Additives Regulations. Reports indicate its illegal use in roasted chana and similar food products to make them appear more visually appealing. Presence of Auramine in any food renders it unsafe under the given Act.

FSSAI has ordered strict enforcement across manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, transport, and sale channels, including e-commerce. Targeted inspections, sampling, testing, and regulatory action are mandated against any Food Business Operators involved in such adulteration. State/UT Commissioners and Central Licensing Authorities must take immediate action and submit a consolidated Action Taken Report within 15 days in the prescribed format. Testing must be conducted through labs authorised for Auramine detection.
