Withdrawal of ₹2000 Banknotes – Status Update

Applicable Act/Rule: Reserve Bank of India regulatory framework under currency management

RBI announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation on May 19, 2023. Deposit and exchange at bank branches was allowed until October 07, 2023. Post this date, deposit and exchange facilities continue only at designated RBI Issue Offices and through India Post for credit to bank accounts.

RBI has published the latest status showing a steep decline in ₹2000 notes in circulation. The total value in circulation has reduced from ₹3.56 lakh crore (as on May 19, 2023) to ₹5,743 crore (as on November 29, 2025), reflecting the return of 98.39% of such notes. ₹2000 banknotes continue to remain legal tender while withdrawal measures remain in effect through RBI Issue Offices.
