Amendment to Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 – Exemption for Highly Specialized Equipment

Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 mandates compulsory registration for specified electronics and IT goods prior to manufacture, import, or sale in India. The Order applies to manufacturers and importers of notified electronic goods to ensure conformity with Indian Standards. The Order has been amended multiple times, including through notifications dated July 01, 2021, April 26, 2023, April 09, 2024, October 09, 2024, March 20, 2025, September 22, 2025, November 04, 2025 and January 22, 2026. The present notification further amends the exemption provisions relating to highly specialized equipment.

In the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021, paragraph 8 inserted vide notification No. S.O. 2844(E) dated July 01, 2021 shall be read as follows:

Exemption for Highly Specialized Equipment (HSE): HSE as per the criteria given below shall stand exempted from application of this Order based on specific exemption issued by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology under Para 2 of Gazette notification S.O. No 1248(E) dated the 18th March, 2021, as amended by S.O. 1929(E) dated 26th April 2023, provided they are manufactured/ imported in less than 100 units per model per year—

  1. Equipment powered by three phase power supply; or
  2. Equipment powered by single phase power supply with current rating exceeding 16 Ampere; or
  3. Equipment with dimensions exceeding 1.5 m × 0.8 m; or
  4. Equipment with weight exceeding 80 Kg.”

The amendment specifies that such highly specialized equipment meeting the above criteria and produced or imported in fewer than 100 units per model annually may be granted exemption from the compulsory registration requirements under the Order.
