What is Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011?

This is a Central Food Regulation drafted by Food Authority in accordance with Section 92 (1) of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The Regulation explain allowable quantity of contaminants, toxins and residues in food articles.

Purpose of Food Regulations

These Regulations are being drafted to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption by regulating the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import etc of food articles

Clause 2.3.2 – Antibiotic And Other Pharma-Cologically Active Substances

1) The amount of antibiotic mentioned in column (2), on the sea foods including shrimps, prawns or any other variety of fish and fishery products, shall not exceed the tolerance limit prescribed in column (3) of the table given below:—

2) The use of any of the following antibiotics and other Pharmacologically Active Substances shall be prohibited in any unit processing sea foods including shrimps, prawns or any other variety of fish and fishery products —

Clause 2.3.2 of the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011

Any person who manufactures, stores, sells, distributes, or imports unsafe food for human consumption shall be liable for punishment based on the severity of the outcome: up to six months’ imprisonment and a fine up to ₹1 lakh if no injury occurs; up to one year and ₹3 lakh fine for non-grievous injury; up to six years and ₹5 lakh fine for grievous injury; and a minimum of seven years’ imprisonment (extendable to life) and a fine of at least ₹10 lakh if it results in death.
