Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Department of Consumer Affairs, periodically revises Indian Standards to align them with technological developments, current manufacturing practices, and updated international benchmarks. The standards being superseded in this notification cover ophthalmic surgical instruments — precision medical devices used in eye surgery — some of which had not been revised since the 1970s and 1980s. In accordance with sub-rule (1) of Rule 15 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Rules, 2018, BIS has notified 11 revised Indian Standards for ophthalmic surgical instruments, established on May 14, 2026, each replacing a corresponding earlier version. The prior standards will remain concurrently in force until their withdrawal on November 14, 2026.
The 11 standards established and their corresponding superseded standards are as follows:
All superseded standards are to be withdrawn on November 14, 2026.
