Applicable Act/Rule: Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006

Applicable Section/Rule Regulation 10 of the Food Safety and Standards (Import) Regulations, 2017

Effective date – May 1, 2026

The Food Safety and Standards (Import) Regulations, 2017 set the framework for inspection, sampling, and testing of imported food products

The amendment revises regulation 10 to ensure standardisation in food testing and timely reporting by laboratories.

  • The earlier clause (b) in sub-regulation (4) is replaced to mandate use of FSSAI-approved manuals of analysis. If unavailable, validated methods from international bodies such as AOAC, ISO, Codex, or BIS may be used.
  • Sub-regulation (5) is substituted, requiring that notified or referral laboratories issue the analysis report in FORM-2 within five days of receiving the sample.
