FSSAI Reinforces Stringent Food Safety Norms for E-commerce Platforms across India

Notification/Circular No.: Press Release by FSSAI dated July 8, 2025

Applicable Act/Rule: Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006

In a high-level meeting held on July 8, 2025, at the FSSAI headquarters in New Delhi, the CEO of FSSAI issued strong directives to over 70 representatives from leading e-commerce platforms, emphasising non-negotiable food safety compliance.

The directives are aimed at ensuring stricter hygiene, safety, and transparency across the e-commerce food supply chain.

All e-commerce platforms engaged in the sale of food products must now:

  • Prominently display FSSAI License / Registration numbers on all receipts, invoices, and cash memos.
  • Include details of the Food Safety Connect App on all consumer-facing documents.
  • Disclose and regularly update details of warehouses and storage facilities on the FoSCoS portal, including uploading photographs of these facilities.
  • Ensure all food handlers, including delivery personnel and warehouse staff, undergo mandatory FoSTaC (Food Safety Training & Certification) in hygiene protocols.
  • Share detailed training plans and implementation timelines with FSSAI.
  • Display “Date of Expiry/Use By” information on consumer interfaces where applicable.
  • Follow all SOPs under the FSS Act and ensure that all storage facilities are duly licensed or registered with FSSAI.
  • Share relevant operational data, including details of food handlers and warehouses, with FSSAI to strengthen compliance tracking.

The CEO instructed that any non-compliance will attract strict enforcement action. FSSAI reinforced that food safety is a shared responsibility among all parties in the supply chain from manufacturers to delivery agents.
