Quality Standards for Glass Containers Intended for Food Contact

All glass containers intended to come into contact with food products shall adhere to the following quality standards to ensure safety, hygiene, and integrity of packaging:

1. Freedom from Defects
The containers shall, to the greatest extent possible, be free from manufacturing defects such as blisters, mould marks, stones, chippings, cords, seeds, and other visible imperfections that may compromise product safety or quality.

2. Surface Finish
The containers shall possess a smooth and uniform surface, free from cracks, pinholes, sharp edges, or any other irregularities that may pose a risk to handling, filling, or product containment.

3. Sealing Surface Integrity
The sealing areas of the containers shall be free from hairline cracks, prominent seam marks, or any surface imperfections that may interfere with proper sealing or compromise the product’s shelf life

Penalty for non-compliance:

The use of unsafe packaging materials, including non-food-grade plastics, inks, or recycled components, is strictly prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018. Any violation may attract a penalty of up to ₹1,00,000 and, in cases of repeated non-compliance, may lead to suspension or cancellation of the food business operator’s license
